Reading -  Students spend independent reading time on Achieve 3000, reading articles, completing activities, and responding to thought questions.  In our reading groups we are working on analyzing characters.   This week we also worked on why readers abandon books when they read.  Each day we work through the Daily 5 which includes reading to self, reading to someone, word work, writing, and technology.

Writing - Students are working to improve their narrative writing through writer's workshop.  We continued talking about what third grade writer's Do and Don't Do.  We also worked on using "small moments" when we don't know what to write about.  This week groups of  students worked on defining figurative language, similes, metaphors, idioms, alliteration, onomatopoeias, clichés, personification, and hyperboles.  Each group taught the class about their assigned area through posters, videos, and Prezi's.

Math - This week we worked on applying the commutative property.  If 6 x 4 = 24 then 4 x 6 = 24.  Students work daily on  number of the day, problem solving, math writing, and I-Pad activities that support the Common Core State Standards.  On Tuesdays and Thursday students also work on multiplication facts.

Inquiry - Our next unit of inquiry on weather will be coming soon.
