 Reading - This week we will work on identifying the key ideas and details of literature. We will also learn to use information gained from the illustrations and words in print to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.  We will continue to work on making text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections along with asking relevant questions to show deeper understanding. On Friday we will be working in the computer lab on an individualized reading program called Achieve 3000.

Writing - This week students will continue to work on their opinion piece about whether it is better to give or to receive a gift. Students will state their opinion and supply reasons for support of that opinion. In mechanics, usage, and grammar students will be reviewing using capital letters at the beginning of sentences.  

Math - This week we will continue to work on subtracting two digit numbers without and with regrouping. We will begin working on finding the missing addend in an equation.  Students work daily on a number of the day, problem solving, and activities that support the Common Core State Standards. Students are also completing a pre-assessment of Operations and Algebraic Thinking.  

Inquiry - This week we will learn about the three branches of Federal Government.  We will complete our study of Holidays in Other Lands with the Chinese New Year.

We will work on making text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections along with asking relevant questions to show deeper understanding. On Monday and Friday we will be working in the computer lab on an individualized reading program called Achieve 3000.

Writing - This week students will continue to work on their opinion piece about whether it is better to give or to receive a gift. Students will state their opinion and supply reasons for support of that opinion. In mechanics, usage, and grammar students are working on using quotation marks correctly.

Math - This week we will continue to work on subtracting two digit numbers without and with regrouping. Students work daily on a number of the day, problem solving, and activities that support the Common Core State Standards. Students are also completing an assessment of Numbers in Base Ten skills and understanding.

Inquiry - We continue to study Federal Government by completing an Activation Guide and KWL chart. In our study of Holidays in Other Lands we will visit France and Israel.

Community Service Project:  Room 101E...You Rock!  We collected $43 and were able to buy Jacob a Lego Set, Connect Four, an Angry Birds T-shirt, and dinosaur pajamas.  Thank you for helping to make Jacob's Christmas a little merrier!

Progress Reports were sent home on Friday.  Please review your child's progress report, sign, and return the bottom portion of the report.

Community Service Project:  The students in Room 101E selected a name off the PTA Giving Tree.  We will be collecting donations through Friday, December 14th to purchase a gift for 6 year old Jacob.

Writing - Students have been working hard on finishing their personal experience stories.  Our next writing activity will focus on opinion.  We are also working on using apostophes to show ownership.

Math - This week we practiced subtracting single digit numbers and began working on subtracting double digit numbers without regrouping.  Students work daily on a number of the day, problem solving, and activities that support the Common Core State Standards

Inquiry - Students will finish their State Government posters.  We will begin our next inquiry on Federal Government by completing an Activation Guide.
We will also begin working on a mini-study of Holidays in other Lands.

Reading - This week we will continue to work on identifying the key ideas and details of non-fiction text. We will also continue to listen to our inner voice when we read to make connections and deepen our understanding.  On Monday through shared reading we wil read The Turkey's Lucky Day: Presidential Pardon. Students will continue to build stamina in their independent reading by reading to self, reading to someone, and visiting the listening center during Daily 5 rotations.

Writing - This week we will work on finishing up our narrative piece that describe actions, thoughts, and feelings. We will also continue to work on contractions.

Math - This week we will begin working on subtracting single digit numbers.  Please remember to have your child practice their Rocket Math facts nightly. This can be done orally or written. Rocket Math tests are given on Tuesday and Thursday.

Inquiry - Students will finish their research on state government symbols.  

Due to the short week students will not have a words their way spelling assessment.  A new sort will come home on Tuesday for the week of November 26th.

Reading - This week we will work on identifying the key ideas and details of non-fiction text.  On Monday through shared reading we will learn about how Veteran's Day become a national holiday.  Students will continue to build stamina in their independent reading by reading to self, reading to someone, and visiting the listening center during Daily 5 rotations.

Writing - This week we will continue working on a narrative piece that describe actions, thoughts, and feelings. Students will review the different ways to use commas. After that we will begin to work with contractions.

Math - This week we are demonstrating how to skip counting to 1,000 by 100's, 10's and 5's.  We will begin working on adding 10 or 100 to any given number 100-900.  Just a reminder to have your child practice their Rocket Math facts nightly.  This can be done orally or written.  Rocket Math tests are given on Tuesday and Thursday.

Inquiry - This week students will be identifying thick and thin questions that they wrote during a gallery walk on state government symbols. 

Report cards were sent home on Friday.  Please sign and return the report card envelope as soon as possible.  Thank you!

Writing - This week we will begin working on a narrative piece that describe actions, thoughts, and feelings.  Students are also working on using commas in a series, and to set off a speaker's words.  After that we will begin to work with contractions.

Math - This week we are working on skip counting to 1,000 by 100's, 10's and 5's.

Inquiry - This week students will begin exploring state government symbols.

Reading - This week through shared and guided reading we will be working on story mapping, character comparison, and main idea.  Students will continue to build stamina in their independent reading by reading to self, reading to someone, and visiting the listening center during Daily 5 rotations.

Writing - This week we will work on finishing up the writing process for Writer's Workshop.

Students are also working on using commas in big numbers, in a series, and to set off a speaker's words.

Math - This week we are continuing to work on comparing numbers using great than, less than, and equal to. We will also be working on skip counting to 1,000 by 100's, 10's and 5's.

Inquiry - This week students will work on finishing their inquiry reports on local government.

Reading - This week we will be reading Halloween poerty and short stories.  We will be working on  comprehension, choosing the meaning of words, paying attention to detail, comparing and contrasting, and word definition.  Students will continue to build stamina in their independent reading by reading to self, reading to someone, and visiting the listening center during Daily 5 rotations.

Writing - This week we will continue to work on launching writer's workshop by learning the steps in the writing process.  We will also learn about and write skeleton alliterations.

Students are also working on using commas to separate city and state, to separate the date from the year in dates, after the greeting and the closing in letters, and in big numbers.     

Math - This week we are continuing to work on comparing numbers using great than, less than, and equal to.  We will also work with a pictograph about a pumpkin carving contest.

Inquiry - This week students will begin to write their local government reports.  We will also be working on our group collaboration strategies.

Reading - This week we will be working on reading informational text and using text features to identify the main topic of paragraphs within the text.  Students will continue to build stamina in their independent reading by reading to self, reading to someone, and visiting the listening center during Daily 5 rotations.   

Writing - This week we will be launching Writer's Workshop.  Students will work on keeping a journal, choosing topics, story mapping, and beginning a story (rough draft).  

Students are continuing to work on using correct end punctuation when writing sentences.     

Math - This week we are working on place value, understanding the value of a digit in a number.  For example 830, what is the value of the 3?  The value of the 3 would be 30.  We will also be working on comparing numbers using great than, less than, or equal to.

Don't forget to practice Rocket Math every night!

Inquiry - On Friday we watched an interactive power point on local government.  Students will be selecting a component of local government to research.  This week we will spend time in the computer lab reseaching and taking notes on our topics of interest.

Reading - We are continuing to work on CAFE - comprehension, accuaracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary while we are reading in our guided reading groups. This week we worked on an accuracy strategy called "chunking." Students practice the CAFE strategies while reading to self or reading to someone! In our Guided Reading groups we are  also working on leaving tracks of our thinking. Students are learning to ask "thick" questions that require them to read further or research what they are wondering.  

Writing - This week we will be working on the 6 Trait writing component of "Ideas."  Students will work on choosing a strong idea and making it clear.   

Math - In math groups we are continuing to work on adding multi-digit numbers with or without regrouping, adding 3 or 4 two digit numbers, and problem solving. This week we will also work with base ten.

Inquiry - We have been learning and practicing comprehension and collaboration strategies as we prepare for our first inquiry unit on government. This week we will focus on sharing our passions. 

I'm looking forward to seeing all parents this week for our first parent-teacher conferences.

Reading - We are continuing to work on CAFE - comprehension, accuaracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary while we are reading in our guided reading groups. This week we worked on an accuracy strategy called "Flip the Sound."  Students practice the CAFE strategies while reading to self or reading to someone!

Writing - This week we will be learning about the parts of a letter while we write thank you letters to PTA for the Mitchell in Motion event!  

Math - In math groups we are continuing to work on adding multi-digit numbers with or without regrouping, and problem solving.  This week we will also work on adding 3 or 4 two digit numbers. 

All students will need a paper toweling tube for math a.s.a.p. Thank you!

Inquiry - We have been learning and practicing comprehension and collaboration strategies as we prepare for our first inquiry unit on government. Our focus has been on identifying non-fiction features in non-fiction books. 

Congratulations Room 101E we were awarded two FISH awards this week.  We received the Golden Paintbrush for great work habits in Art.  We also received the Principal Award for being on task and working hard during our literacy block.
